Showcase of Marching Bands is scheduled for Oct. 11 at South



The Washington County Board of Education will present the 2005 Showcase of Marching Bands Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m. at South Hagerstown High School.

The Hancock High School Panther Band will be the host band for the event. Other participating bands are Clear Spring High School Blazer Band, Boonsboro High School Warrior Band, North Hagerstown High School Hub Band, Smithsburg High School Leopard Band, South Hagerstown High School Rebel Band and Williamsport High School Blue Band. The Shepherd University Ram Marching Band also will be featured.

Tickets are $4 in advance and $5 at the gate. Senior Citizen Gold Cards will be honored.

The rain date is Monday, Oct. 17. Gates will open at 6:15 p.m.

Washington County School Board will host Showcase of Schools

As part of its 140th anniversary in public education, the Washington County Board of Education will host a Showcase of Schools from Saturday, Oct. 15, through Sunday, Oct. 23.

A parade will kick off the week in the Valley Mall parking lot on Oct. 15 at 9:30 a.m. School bands, groups and floats will march the ring road at the mall. Inside the mall, exhibits featuring the schools will be on display.

Sharpsburg Elementary principal wants to raise $2,000 for relief



SHARPSBURG - Sharpsburg Elementary School Principal Carl Stark has challenged his students, staff and community to raise $2,000 in the school's effort to help the American Red Cross provide assistance to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

If the challenge is met by Friday, Stark has promised to dress up as Woody from the movie "Toy Story" and ride a horse.

The school raised $1,000 toward the goal in one week.




Heritage Academy to host annual Grandparents' Luncheon



Heritage Academy will host its annual Grandparents' Luncheon Friday at 10 a.m.

Elementary students will present a program. The journalism class will take photographs and will be offering 5-by-7-inch portraits of grandparents with their grandchildren.

In other activities, the eighth-grade class will travel to the National Historic Landmark village in Waterford, Va., on Oct. 7 with Grace Academy history teacher Robert Becker. Waterford is an old Quaker town where students will experience colonial music, crafts and a tour of 18th- and 19th-century homes.

Also, the senior class at Heritage Academy will sponsor an American Red Cross blood drive Wednesday, Oct. 12.

Shepherd Music Department to host visitation day for students



SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - The Shepherd University Music Department will host a visitation day Monday, Oct. 10, for all high school juniors and seniors.

Visiting high school students will attend classes and rehearsals, meet faculty and admissions counselors, and tour the campus.

James Buchanan High School will host Parents Night on Tuesday



MERCERSBURG, Pa. - The faculty and administration of James Buchanan High School will sponsor Parents Night Tuesday at 6:45 p.m.

The purpose of Parents Night is to familiarize parents with the subjects their children are studying during the year and to meet with teachers.
