Auditions to be held for 'Christmas Story'

MIDDLETOWN, Va. - Open-call auditions for the Christmas production for Wayside Theatre's 2005 holiday season will be held today and Monday, Sept. 26, for adults and children.

The play is based on Jean Shepherd's screen script "A Christmas Story."

Auditions will be 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and 1 to 9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, at Wayside Theatre on U.S. 11. To schedule an audition time, call 1-540-869-1776.

Adults need to prepare two contrasting 30- to 60-second monologues and bring their headshot and resume. Children need to read or recite a monologue, poem or story 30 to 60 seconds long. Boys ages 8 to 15 and girls ages 10 to 15 are needed.

The production will run from Saturday, Nov. 26, through Saturday, Dec. 24.

Writer to speak, present reading

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Award-winning fiction writer Jayne Anne Phillips will be in Shepherdstown to fulfill a weeklong residency, Tuesday, Sept. 27, through Saturday, Oct. 1.


Phillips will meet with the students and community to discuss her writings and conduct programs. Events begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, with a Critics Corner discussion of her book, "Machine Dreams," and a book signing in the War Memorial Building in Shepherdstown.

At 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, Phillips will give a reading at Martinsburg Public Library followed by a book signing at 7 p.m. in the Cumberland Room of the Student Center at Shepherd University. Phillips will present her keynote lecture, "Home is Where You Come From," at 8 p.m. in the Storer Ballroom, Student Center at Shepherd University.
