Man charged in attack

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - A Hedgesville man was charged Friday in connection with a beating with a baseball bat that left a man with a concussion and broken shoulder, according to court records.

Jerry Lee Smith, 39, of 53 Navajo Lane, was charged with one count of malicious wounding.

West Virginia State Police Sgt. S.E. Davis wrote in court records that the beating happened on July 2 on Flying Dove Lane in Hedgesville. The victim, Travis Roach, was hit several times in the shoulder and neck area with a metal baseball bat, police said.

Five witnesses gave statements to police, records state.
