Bridge to reopen

September 23, 2005

Broadfording Bridge over the Conococheague Creek will reopen to traffic Tuesday, Sept. 27, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5:30 p.m., according to a Washington County Commission press release.

One of a number of historic stone arch bridges spanning creeks and streams in Washington County, the bridge was built in 1829. It was closed in 2003 for repairs and has remained closed except for a period between January and June of this year.

Repairs included the forming and pouring of concrete collars, repointing of spandrel walls, reconstruction of piers, reconstruction of parapet caps and portions of the parapet walls, repointing of the arches and repointing of other portions of the structure.

A new asphalt surface was applied, along with installation of a new traffic barrier.
