September 22, 2005

Washington County is home to about 200 houses of worship with diversification fueled by language or doctrine or both.

One of the newer congregations was formed in the spring of 2005 by a group of immigrants from Belarus, which formerly was part of the Soviet Union.

Separated by language, but brought together by faith, two congregations of Assembly of God members - one Belarussian and one American - now are worshipping in the same house of God.

The group, which numbers between 35 and 40 men, women and children, holds fellowship services Sundays at 2 p.m. and Wednesdays at 7 p.m. at Zion Assembly of God, 13814 Village Mill Drive in Maugansville.

At the pulpit is Eugene Brodov, ordained in the Assemblies of God denomination in May 2005. He speaks only Russian, but through his two children, it was learned that the Brodov family emigrated to America in 2003 from Belarus.

Before coming to Zion, the Brodovs and others from their homeland attended services at Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren. Because they and others were affiliated with the Assemblies of God denomination, they had been looking for a place to call home.

Several other families who gravitated to the church echoed that religious freedom was their reason for coming to America and now to Zion Assembly of God in Maugansville.
