Overturned rig detours traffic

September 20, 2005|by ERIN CUNNINGHAM

HALFWAY - Traffic was detoured off of Interstate 70 westbound Monday evening after a tractor-trailer overturned east of Interstate 81, police said.

The trailer was carrying a load of sugar water, which spilled onto the road about 6:40 p.m., according to Maryland State Police. Troopers and emergency personnel were still on the scene of the accident at 10:15 p.m.

Troopers said the tractor-trailer ran off the highway and overturned. A portion of the truck was hanging over the I-70 railroad overpass between Virginia and Bower avenues.

A part of the tractor-trailer broke off and landed on the railroad tracks below, troopers said.

I-70 westbound remained closed until at least 10:15 p.m. as emergency crews worked to clear the scene.

The driver, who works for Rudy Transportation in Frederick, Md., had minor injuries and was taken to Washington County Hospital, police said.
