Washington County residents looking for information or books to read may visit the Washington County Free Library or one of seven branches.

The library, chartered in 1898, is the oldest chartered county library system in the United States.

The Western Maryland Room at the 100 S. Potomac St. library location has a large collection of historical and genealogical materials covering the area. Hours are Monday from 2 to 9 p.m., and Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The 100 S. Potomac St. library's hours are Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.

    The Smithsburg Library is expected to move to a new, larger building in Smithsburg's Veterans Park. A single-story, 8,742-square-foot facility is being constructed at the park. It is estimated that the project will be finished May 2, 2006.
