CASCADE - On Sundays from the end of May through Oct. 10 at Pen Mar Park in Cascade, bands play and there is dancing from 2 to 5 p.m.
The Washington County park, at Appalachian Trail's Scenic View 10, was opened in 1877 as an amusement park developed by the Western Maryland Railroad. When it was dismantled in 1943, the park included a scenic outlook, roller coaster, movie theater, dance pavilion, photo studio, dining hall, miniature train, carousel and penny arcade.
Pen Mar Park reopened in May 1977. A multipurpose, open-air pavilion was constructed on the site of the original dance pavilion by the Pen Mar Park Pavilion Committee, a group of people from Maryland and Pennsylvania.
Everybody's Day, the annual commemoration of an earlier time at Pen Mar, is held every year on the last Sunday in August.
