Woolly bears

September 19, 2005

In October, when leaves are turning red and gold, Washington County's woolly bears are turning out to predict the winter weather in brown and black. It's in their coats.

Legend has it that if the black band at the front is larger than the one at the back, the first part of the winter will be most severe, and vice versa. The Hagers-Town Town and Country Almanack sponsors a contest every October to find the cutest and biggest woolly bears.
