MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Martinsburg woman was shot once in the chest Thursday morning, but both she and her boyfriend told police the gun went off accidentally, according to a Martinsburg Police Department detective.

No charges were filed in connection with the shooting, which happened just after 8 a.m. at the Fairlawn Garden apartment complex, Detective Scott Doyle said.

Amanda Chaney, whom Doyle said is in her 20s, was shot with a .38-caliber revolver.

When police responded to the shooting site, at 102 Eclipse Court, Apt. 7, they saw a large marijuana plant growing near a bedroom window, court records state.

Chaney's boyfriend, Dustin Wayne Stout, 22, who lived in the apartment, was charged with cultivation of marijuana, police said. Stout admitted the marijuana plant was his and also spoke to officers about the shooting, police said.

"He claimed (the gun) accidentally went off. That's the same thing she's saying," Doyle said.

Chaney was taken to City Hospital and later to Winchester (Va.) Medical Center for treatment of the wound, which Doyle said did not appear to be life-threatening.

The shooting remains under investigation.
