Golf notes - Hubs turn to one of their own in Allen

September 16, 2005|by TIM KOELBLE

It has been a year of firsts for Hagerstown's Ryan Allen.

Earlier in 2005, Allen entered into the PGA's Club Professional program as an assistant at Fountain Head Country Club.

Soon after the prep golf season opened with the Washington County tournament on Aug. 17 with Andy Spessard as the head coach at North Hagerstown, Allen suddenly found himself taking over the Hubs' golf program.

Spessard, himself an avid golfer, was caught in an administrative "red-tape" situation and broke ties with the program.

In need of a coach, the Hubs turned to Allen, a graduate of North and the University of Maryland, and a former member of The Herald-Mail sports staff.

"I guess working and living in the area ... it became an opportunity and I jumped at it," said Allen. "I wasn't expecting something like that to come along ... a 23-year-old head coach."

Allen received the "blessing" of Fountain Head head professional Darren Smith to take time away from his duties.

"(Darren) signed off on it," said Allen. "There are some afternoon schedule adjustments, but he encouraged me to do it."

- A dozen prep golfers who received accolades in 2004 are back on the links, and most of them appear in the stats.

One, however, not on the list is Chambersburg junior Clayton Rotz, possibly the top golfer in the Tri-State area.

Rotz carded a recent 2-under-par 70 and two sub-par nine-hole rounds, but his overall statistics are not available.

Otherwise, North's Steve Hutzell tops the list of Top 25 individuals with a 36.8 nine-hole stroke average.

- Postseason tournaments are around the corner.

Maryland regionals take place at Black Rock, and West Virginia districts take place at Locust Hill in Charles Town, W.Va., both slated for Sept. 27. The PIAA District 3 tournament is slated for Oct. 14.

- Coaches are urged to report matches nightly to The Herald-Mail at 1-800-626-6397 or by e-mail at

Season stats must be submitted via e-mail or by fax at 301-714-0245 by Thursday at 4 p.m. to be included in that week's Preps Extra.
