County OKs grant application

The Washington County Commissioners on Tuesday authorized the Washington County Community Action Council (CAC) to submit an application for a $50,000 grant to help pay for homeless shelters.

The Emergency Shelter Grant application will be submitted to the Department of Housing and Community Development. The grant program provides money to prevent homelessness and to help improve the quality of existing emergency and transitional shelters for the county's homeless, according to information provided by the county.

Money also goes toward maintenance and operating costs to provide supportive services to the homeless, such as safe and sanitary shelter and services to help improve their housing situations, according to the information.

The CAC would receive $25,000 of the grant, CASA Inc. would receive $10,000, St. John's Family Shelter would receive $10,000 and REACH would receive $5,000.
