Scrap tire drop-off slated for Sept. 24

September 14, 2005

Washington County residents can recycle old tires for free this month thanks to a state-funded scrap tire program.

Scrap tire drop-off day - sponsored by the county Solid Waste Department - will be Saturday, Sept. 24, from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m., at Forty West Landfill on U.S. 40, one mile west of the Md. 63 intersection.

Recycling Coordinator Harvey Hoch said that only Washington County citizens will be allowed to take part in the event, and that only five tires per household will be accepted. No return trips by any vehicle will be allowed, and tires must be of a rim size of 17 inches or less, with the exception of one agriculture tire allowed. Rims, race car tires, and commercial or business tires will not be accepted.

Participants should be prepared to show proper vehicle registration. Nonacceptable tires will be subject to a disposal fee.

For more information, call the Solid Waste Department at 240-313-2790.
