Kids pool pennies for victims

September 13, 2005

CLEAR SPRING - A penny drive to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina was the brainchild of Tristan Peck, a first-grader at Clear Spring Elementary School.

Principal Amy Norris said Tristan approached her first-grade teacher to see if the school could start a penny drive for the survivors, and the plans began to take shape.

"We decided to have the drive every morning for two weeks starting Sept. 7," Norris said.

The enrichment students in third, fourth and fifth grades have been staffing the table in the school lobby each morning.

As of Monday, Norris said, four large plastic pretzel jars had been filled to the brim with money from the drive.
