Charlton school students planning annual reunion

September 13, 2005

CLEAR SPRING - The "graduates" of the Charlton One-Room School plan to get together Sept. 24 for their 26th annual reunion to share the memories of their experiences.

This year's event will be held at Antietam Family Restaurant at 13208 Fountainhead Plaza off Pennsylvania Avenue in Hagerstown, according to Lorraine Grosh.

The social hour begins at 11 a.m. and lunch will be served at noon.

Grosh, who wrote a book about the school, said the earliest records of the school go back to 1889. The building on Dam No. 5 Road was built for $756 and housed grades one through eight in one room.

The school, shown here in its early days, is now a private residence.

The first reunion of the students who attended the school was held in 1979 at Windy Hill Restaurant in Clear Spring. Last year, the 25th anniversary was commemorated.

"We began with about 75 members and we now have about 31," Grosh said.
