You Said It

September 12, 2005

"Don't you Bush bashers get tired of constantly spewing hate? We conservatives had to put up with eight years of Bill Clinton chasing skirts. Still, you never heard the kind of filth coming from us that we have to listen to from you."

- Hagerstown

"I wish all the best of luck to the people of New Orleans, and I wish that we had some kind of stadium here that they could come to. I wish that people in Hagerstown would think about adopting families and try to take in some of the New Orleans residents."

- Hagerstown

"I just want to congratulate the Funkstown Fire Department on their great service to the community, and for the barbecues and duck races. A very special thanks to the great assistant chief."

"Someone said that God wouldn't support a war. Read your Bible and get an education. Read the story of David and Goliath and the Old Testament, which shows how people wiped out other tribes and God gave people the power to lead groups into battle."

"Complaining about complainers is complaining."

- Hagerstown

"I would like to say 'thank you' to my two best friends for throwing a wonderful bridal shower for me, and to my mother for everything she has done to help to make my wedding successful. I look forward to my wedding and I cannot thank my mom enough. I love you all."

- Hagerstown

"About preachers charging for funeral services: I didn't know that they did this. Do all preachers charge to say something over the dead, after they've been lifelong members? I agree that most preachers today are well-paid, and I think that if you're a lifelong church member, that is their duty."

- Halfway

"This is in regards to the letter to the editor on Boonsboro being too crowded. Enrollment there right now is 957 students, with state capacity at 1,029. In regards to the North High stadium being built, it is done mainly with private funds. For information, go to www.mikecallasstadium.com."

"A lady in Williamsport complained that she doesn't get to watch her soap operas because of the hurricane coverage on TV. Believe me, those people in New Orleans and Mississippi would love to just have a home to sit in. I think that's why the United States gets into trouble - because the people are so selfish."

- Smithsburg

"I heard two talk show hosts making fun of Oprah Winfrey and her angels going to New Orleans and doing a lot of work, bringing tractor-trailers full of food, volunteers, Hollywood stars and rap singers, and her friends. The talk show hosts were trying to say it was a photo op. I haven't seen them down there helping out. They should be down there helping out instead of running their mouths."

- Hagerstown

"I think The Herald-Mail ought to put a box of tissues on this (You Said It) page, because I'm tired of hearing about the gas prices. What about all the developments going up in the Hagerstown area? Don't you think this is going to bring the economy down in Hagerstown?"

"When my mother passed away, after attending a church regularly for 84 years, I was amazed to find out that our pastor had accepted money for saying a few words over her grave. He is paid a very nice salary, and I always thought it was something that the preacher would do out of respect for my mom. I still attend that church, but I look at the pastor in a different light."

- Williamsport

"Let's rethink using Fort Ritchie for the Gulf Coast refugees. There's no public transportation or jobs in that remote area. How would they survive without these two basic needs being met? I have compassion for the victims. Let's make good decisions. God bless them all."

- Washington County

"This is in response to all the calls about SUVs, gas mileage, the price of gas, and cutting back on usage. That's not going to happen. The American public is so spoiled that they're not going to change if gas is $5 a gallon. They'll still jump in their SUVs and cars to drive to a restaurant to buy a meal because they're too lazy to cook at home. They'll just run to the mall or run to the outlets because that's what they've always done. I'm addicted to cigarettes; they're addicted to running."

"As a way to save gasoline, maybe we should bring back the blue laws nationwide through the end of the year. If people aren't running on Sundays to shop, think of all the gasoline that would be saved."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"For all the Hagerstown residents who keep complaining about paying city and county tax, the only thing you can do is pull your kids out of county schools and build your own city schools. See if that saves you any tax money. It is the county that operates all the schools that I'm assuming your kids go to."

- Washington County

"If the mayor wants to hold a 'come to the altar' revival meeting, he should do it in the hallway or in a separate room. When they come in and sit down, it's supposed to be a council business meeting. If he wants to do prayers, he should do them outside the room. Separation of church and state still holds in this country."
