September 12, 2005|by DAVE McMILLION

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A Harpers Ferry, W.Va., woman was shot in her leg and stomach late Saturday in the Berkeley Garden Apartments along U.S. 11 north of Martinsburg, police said.

Julia Weaver, 18, was in front of a building with friends when she was shot shortly before midnight, said Capt. K.C. Bohrer of the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department.

Weaver was taken to City Hospital, where she underwent surgery for her injuries, Bohrer said.

Weaver was in good condition at the hospital Sunday afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Weaver was staying with her sister, who resides at Berkeley Garden, Bohrer said.

Investigators believe a vehicle parked at the intersection of Joshua Drive and Garden Drive was involved in the shooting, according to Bohrer.

Witnesses described the vehicle as a red sport utility vehicle, Bohrer said.

Investigators found several shell casings in the road and on a nearby berm, and a bullet fragment was recovered from a vehicle that was shot during the incident, said Bohrer, adding that several shots were fired.
