Lanvale Street closed temporarily

Work has begun on the reconstruction of Lanvale Street as part of the Gateway Crossing Phase III project. The section of Lanvale Street between Elgin Boulevard and Summer Street will be closed to all traffic.

Motorists are advised that traffic delays are likely near the work area, and that alternate routes should be considered. That section of Lanvale Street will be closed until about Sept. 20.

Emergency vehicles will not be able to pass through the work zone.

Open house to mark CRS 50th anniversary

Community Rescue Service will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a Public Safety Awareness Day open house Sunday at CRS headquarters on Eastern Boulevard from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event will include a child seat safety check staffed by certified installation technicians, and tours of the Safety House Trailer, an ambulance, a Maryland State Police helicopter and the station.


There will be a Sept. 11 remembrance ceremony at noon. Admission is free. Donations will be accepted for the car seat program as well as hurricane victim relief.

Project Aware meeting to be held

The Washington County Emergency Management Agency and the Washington County Health Department will hold a Project Aware information meeting Wednesday, Sept. 14, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the auditorium at the health department at 1302 Pennsylvania Ave.

Project Aware is a volunteer recruitment and training program to address homeland security initiatives in public safety, public health and emergency response and disaster preparedness.

Alley to close for two days for work

East Alley behind the Washington County Courthouse will be closed from 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, to 6 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, while a crane is used to install new air conditioning equipment on the roof of the courthouse annex.

The work is part of renovation at the Courthouse Annex.

During the work, no one will be able to enter or occupy the Courthouse Annex Building at 24 Summit Ave.

Home rule forum to be held at church

A home rule forum sponsored by the Washington County League of Women Voters will be Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church on South Prospect Street in Hagerstown.

Those attending are asked to use the rear entrance. Elected officials from Washington and Allegheny counties are expected to speak. Audience participation is encouraged.
