SMITHSBURG - The Smithsburg Police Department responded to 163 calls for service in August, Chief Mike Potter reported at Tuesday's Town Council meeting.
The following crimes were reported: one driving while under the influence, three theft, four malicious destruction of property, one vandalism, one minor in possession of alcoholic beverages, two assault, one indecent exposure, one juvenile in possession of tobacco, one hit and run, one disorderly, one driving without a license, one unattended children, two fights in progress, nine ordinance violations, one suspicious person or vehicle, 11 parking complaints, eight traffic complaints, two domestic distrubances and four juvenile complaints.
Officers made nine adult arrests and three juvenile arrests.
Potter attended NIMS training at the Washington County Sheriff's Office Aug. 8, and another officer attended the same training Aug. 15. One officer is on disability leave, and Potter said the department is "stretched to the limit right now. We're not going to have as much coverage."
