Police investigate shooting incident

August 27, 2005|By Marlo Barnhart

A fight that erupted in gunfire with one person possibly wounded just before 10 p.m. Friday prompted Hagerstown City Police to search for the shooters, as well as victims, in a West End neighborhood, both on foot and with K-9 assistance from Washington County Sheriff's deputies.

Reports were that at least three shots were fired, after which several vehicles, shooters and possibly victims fled the scene in the 200 block of Buena Vista Avenue.

As of 10:30 p.m., Capt. Tom Alexander said police had three people in custody and had recovered one gun. No gunshot victims had been found at that time, he said.

Officers sped to the scene assisted by deputies and also with support from a Maryland State Police helicopter out of Frederick, Md. Several foot pursuits were initiated through the area of new construction along Lanvale Street, where police set up a perimeter to help with the search, police said.

By 10:38 p.m., police had searched all of the new construction and found no one hiding there.

Of the people taken into custody, one was a man found hiding under a vehicle, police said. Witnesses also were being gathered by police to assist in identification of possible suspects, police said.

At press time, police still were trying to sort out what happened and who might have been struck by gunfire - if anyone - as well as who did the shooting.
