BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - The first day of school for Morgan County students is Friday.

School personnel were scheduled to begin Tuesday with an opening-day program at Berkeley Springs High School, Schools Superintendent David Temple told Morgan County Board of Education members last week.

Today, all school personnel are expected to report to Berkeley Springs High School for staff development, and Thursday, they are to report to their assigned school or work location.

Temple said 11 teacher vacancies remain in Morgan County for the upcoming school year. He said it is hard to find certified special education teachers, and two of the resignations that need to be filled were ESL (English as a second language) teachers.

Construction for the piano lab in the band room at Berkeley Springs High School started last week. Laura Hovermale, the fine arts director for Morgan County Schools, said the new electronic pianos for 10 students and one teacher have arrived. Hovermale said the piano lab construction will take about two weeks to complete.

Temple said the roof work at Berkeley Springs High School and Widmyer Elementary School is 75 percent complete. He said the renovations at the main building at Widmyer are near completion, and the new multipurpose building should be finished by the end of September.
