ARDMORE, Pa. - Clayton Rotz, of Chambersburg, Pa., was on top of the United States Golf Association Amateur Championship for two holes Monday in the opening round at Philadelphia Country Club - before reality set in.

Rotz, who will be a senior at Chambersburg High School, birdied his first two holes. He ended with a 4-over-par 74 over the 6,967-yard course that left him in a tie for 123rd place. Rotz had a 36-38 card.

Kevin Reiber, of Waynesboro, Pa., finished with a 6-over-par 76, going without any birdies. He had 12 pars and six bogeys on a 38-38 card that left him in a tie for 182nd.

Both golfers play the second round today at Merion Golf Club and need to elevate their standings into the top 64 to reach match play on Wednesday.
