Smithsburg home benefits from tender, loving care

August 20, 2005

Occasionally you encounter a home that has so much appeal and is so beautifully maintained that it stands above the average.

This is the case with this week's Feature Home, nestled in the rolling hills of Smithsburg's sought-after Whispering Hills community. It's an interior decorator's own home, and tender loving care is evident wherever you look. The home sits on a beautifully maintained lawn with a serene, park-like setting. Mature trees provide privacy and a wonderful color display in the spring and fall. Lush shrubbery, carefully trimmed and shaped, provides a classic and inviting backdrop for the colorful landscaping and flowerbeds.

An attractive colonial picket fence in both the back and side yards provides a safe and ideal space for children and family pets. Gutter downspouts draining into this yard have been carefully routed underground to "dry wells" that enable rain water to drain directly into the ground and prevent surface erosion.

Raised beds around the home add a solid and professional touch to the landscaping. An ample storage shed, carefully painted to match the home, allows for storage of yard and outside recreation equipment. A backyard deck is a perfect outdoor retreat and is canopied by mature trees for shade and privacy. An expanded driveway holds up to three vehicles and the home is situated on the lot with plenty of space to accommodate a two-car garage in the future, should one be desired.

Meticulous care and maintenance are not relegated to the outside of the home. Upon entering the front door, you are greeted by a soaring cathedral ceiling in the foyer and formal living room. A walnut-finished stair railing leads to an eat-in kitchen. Thoughtful details include cherry cabinets and matching cherry laminate flooring that provide easy maintenance in this much-used room. An oversized side-by-side refrigerator with door icemaker, disposal, and upgraded electric range and dishwasher make cooking a delight in this cheerful kitchen. An outlet for a microwave oven has been thoughtfully located inside the kitchen pantry to allow for maximum counter space. Off the kitchen is a beautiful large formal dining room with French doors opening onto the backyard deck.

Several large windows are located on both sides of the house, providing lots of sunlight and cross ventilation. Two of these windows are in the dining room and give an inviting view of the gardens outside. A wide, columned opening connects the dining and living rooms, making it a delightfully open space to entertain family and friends. There is no shortage of bedroom space in this home, which offers three bedrooms on the main floor and a fourth on the lower level. The hall bath, one of three full baths in the home, is large and boasts two linen/storage closets. Tile on the walls above all the bathroom showers/tubs matches the bathroom floors to provide a practical solution for preventing water damage in these areas while giving the baths a high-end look. The master bedroom and bath both have large windows and custom moldings. The lower level of this lovely home is fully finished and includes a full bath, bedroom, cozy den and very large family/recreation room, as well as a separate laundry room with laundry tub and freezer, and large storage closet. Lots of additional windows make this lower level airy and inviting.

Custom touches normally not found in homes include ceiling light fixture outlets in every room, wall sconces for additional light and drama, and decorator light switches for a finished look. Crown moldings, chair rail, very high-grade neutral carpeting and inviting color palettes complement the tastefully decorated rooms.

An abundance of additional custom electrical and wiring features were built into this house. This includes telephone and cable outlets in all bedrooms, family room, kitchen and den, networking wiring capability to allow for multiple home computers to be connected to each other on both floors, and plenty of additional electrical wall outlets. Outlets have also been placed under each window in the house as well, a feature that comes in handy during the holiday season. Also included is a home security system complete with door sensors, motion sensors, and two smoke detectors linked directly to the alarm company and fire department.

The home contains approximately 2,400 square feet of living space. It is located within walking distance of all the Smithsburg schools and is convenient to local parks and shopping. Both I-70 and I-81 are just minutes away, making it an excellent location for those commuting to both the Frederick and Hagerstown areas. Beautiful mountain views, rolling hills, pastoral farmland and orchards surround the delightful Whispering Hills community.
