Medicare drug meet Friday

August 18, 2005

Have you recently received an application for financial help with the cost of the new Medicare Part D prescription plan?

If so, you may want to attend a meeting tomorrow at the Washington County Health Department offices on Pennsylvania Avenue in Hagerstown.

The meeting will run from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and workers from the Social Security Administration will be on hand to help Medicare-eligible citizens with the application.

The standard plan's cost is $32.20 a month, with a $250 deductible. How much help you can get, if any, will be determined by the value of your income and assets.

Those who qualify include individuals with less than $14,355 in gross annual income who have under $11,500 worth of assets. Your home and car don't count as assets.

Couples qualify if they have a gross annual income of less than $19,245 and under $23,000 worth of assets. Again, cars and homes don't count in the asset total.

Even if you are not eligible for the extra financial help, when the prescription drug plans are announced in October, any and all Medicare beneficiaries will be able to choose a plan at that time.

Should you join? To help decide, you can write for a fact sheet to Editorial Page Editor, 100 Summit Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21740.
