Forestry board looking for county's biggest white oak

August 16, 2005

The Washington County Forestry Board is searching for the biggest white oak tree in the county.

"Do you have a possible champion in your yard or on your farm or know someone who does?" asked George Eberling, of the Clear Spring office of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources' Forest Service.

Eberling said white oak grows in a variety of places and is a major component of the mountain forests of this region.

"The forestry board will crown our own local white oak big tree champion through this contest and submit it for inclusion to the state register," he said. "Our local winner will also receive a plaque commemorating their white oak as the biggest in Washington County. So look around, you never know where a champion tree may live."
