County Family Center receives top rating of 'highly favorable'

The Washington County Family Center has received a "highly favorable" rating from Friends of the Family Inc. on its annual monitoring report.

The Family Center has received the top rating every year since monitoring began in 1998.

The Family Center, which opened in 1995, is at 920 W. Washington St., third floor. Its primary goal is to help families become self-sufficient through personal achievement, education and positive parenting.

Services include adult education programs, high school activities, health education services, job readiness activities, self-sufficiency classes, recreational activities and case management services.

Over the past three years, nearly 100 parents have received their high school diplomas after attending classes at The Family Center, according to a prepared release.

Friends of the Family Inc. is a nonprofit organization contracted by the State of Maryland Department of Education to create, administer and monitor the performance of the Family Support network across the state. It operates with the help of community partners.

Funding for the rental space has been provided by the Washington County Commissioners. Teaching staff is provided by the Washington County Board of Education and Hagerstown Community College. A community health nurse from the Health Department provides weekly health education workshops. Workshops are provided by such partners as the Early Intervention Program, the Cooperative Extension Service, Head Start of Washington County, the Mediation Center, Community Action Council and CASA. Its local sponsor is the Washington County Department of Social Services, which provides in-kind support.
