12 local attorneys donate legal services

In the last 12 months, 12 Washington County lawyers have provided free or reduced-fee legal services to county residents through Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service.

They are Kathleen Bailey, G. Clair Baker, Esther Coleman, John P. Corderman, George Knight Jr., Jason Morton, Dixie C. Newhouse, Susan Nicholson, Lisa Poole, Tiffany Reiff, Michael Schaefer and Robert Schwartz.

Bailey, Morton, Reiff and Michael Allen Wilson also provided service by staffing the free self-help family law courthouse clinic. A total of 539 people were helped at the clinic in the past year.

MVLS is a nonprofit organization that provides free and low-cost assistance to low-income people throughout Maryland.

It handles cases involving income tax disputes, landlord/tenant disputes, consumer rights, denial of public benefits, wills, deed changes and name changes.

Since MVLS was created in 1981, 2,500 private attorneys have taken more than 16,000 pro bono cases, donating legal services valued at more than $17 million.
