MIDDLEWAY, W.Va. - A man grabbed a clerk and led her to a cash register in a Middleway convenience store Thursday before escaping the business with about $260, police said.

The clerk was reading a newspaper about 7:16 a.m. in Country Roads General Store along W.Va. 51 when a black male entered the store and told the clerk to open a cash register, said Detective Shawn Bonifant of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.

The assailant was described as having a husky build, and wearing a baseball cap, gloves and a blue bandanna across his face.

The man grabbed the clerk and led her to the cash register, Bonifant said. The man also placed his hand over the woman's mouth, he said.

The clerk opened the register and the man fled with the cash, Bonifant said. The man also pushed the clerk into a corner, Bonifant said.

Maryland State Police told the sheriff's department later Thursday that they were investigating a similar robbery, and Bonifant said he will be looking to determine if the crimes are linked.

Bonifant said he did not know where the robbery in Maryland occurred.
