Mail call from 8/4

August 05, 2005

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I'm calling about the new car wash on Virginia Avenue. I was there on July 30 to wash my car. It's a very nice car wash; it has a lot of water pressure."

- Hagerstown

"I saw in Mail Call on Aug. 2 that there were congratulations given to Mary and Carl for doing a good bartending job over at the Eagles Club on Locust Street. They're not the only two bartenders in Hagers-town. So to make Mary and Lori from the VFW feel good, I would like to congratulate you girls on doing such a good job bartending. I have to say, you go, girls."

"This is in regards to Rafael Palmeiro's statement that he didn't intentionally take steroids and didn't know he did it. Everybody knows when they take steroids or any type of performance-enhancing drugs. Go Yankees!"

"I'm calling in reference to the proposed North High stadium. I wish we had had that years ago when I went to that new North High and graduated in 1961. It would be a good idea, since people are complaining about the funding and expense, if all of us who graduated could make a donation, even as small as $20 or $25 to a fund set up for the North High stadium. I would be the first one to donate. I think it'd be a great idea because it's well worth it and our kids deserve it."

- Hagerstown

"I want to thank my aunt in Smithsburg for calling me when her cherries were ready to be picked so I could make a beautiful cherry pie. I love you."

- Hagerstown

"Rafael Palmeiro doesn't know how steroids got in his body - maybe somebody slipped one in his Viagra supply."

- Martinsburg, W.Va.

"If you would like some beautiful fudge, the ladies at the Clear Spring Carnival have made wonderful fudge and candy."

- Hancock

"How about the Pa., driver on I-81 north putting eyedrops in his eyes doing 73 miles per hour? Cell phones . . . crazy."

"In regards to the lights in Greenberry Hills, why don't the ones who want them get them on their own, instead of trying to force the ones who don't want them to get them? This is wrong and unnecessary. This is everyone's property, not just a few."

- Halfway

"I have a real problem with them accepting a guilty plea for a man with a clear-cut case of premeditated murder. The maximum sentence he faced was life in prison without the possibility of parole. Am I mistaken or doesn't Maryland have the death penalty? Or are Washington County prosecutors a little leery of pursuing a death penalty case. Maybe they have issues with it and maybe those issues ought to come up at the next election. I believe this man should have been tried for capital murder with a death penalty, and he should have been given all of it. Life without possibility of parole; he'll live the rest of his life out in prison while that poor man died and that poor woman got shot."

- Halfway

"Will the people who lost three peacocks please come get them? They've been in the 1400 block of Cearfoss Pike for more than a month. There is a lot of morning and evening traffic here, and the female was hit by a car two weeks ago. She's mending, but still walks with a limp. You may call us at 301-393-9209."

- Hagerstown

"This is in response to the person who saw the 20 dump trucks coming and going to the dump. The trucks are hauling dirt from the landfill over to the runway project. They're not hauling trash, they're hauling dirt."

- Williamsport

"Congratulations to Bambi and James on their engagement and upcoming marriage."

- Williamsport

"Mail Call is doing a great service by printing comments that don't matter. It lets people see how small some people really are."

- Boonsboro

"I live in the lower part of Washington County below Boonsboro. About this article in the paper saying that the pastor should stand out amongst the other people in a suit and tie: why should the pastor wear a suit and tie? I think he should wear what he feels comfortable in. I have never seen a picture of Jesus in a suit and tie - and he preached more than any pastor in the world. Let the preacher wear what he wants to wear to church, and the people going to church do the same thing, as long as they're comfortable."

"I just don't understand this country. You impeach a president who has sex in the White House. His sex did not hurt me in any way, yet you leave a man in office that is an egomaniac. He takes shortcuts in anything he wants for his agenda. Anything he wants, he'll do. He's the one you should impeach."

"For the person who thinks the Mail Call column is becoming irrevelant and will lose readers, I think he or she sounds bored and uptight. Only bored people will stop reading this column, and they will look for another fix. If you love human nature, you'll get a high from this column. Those who are responsible for 'selecting' subject matter, you are quite wise. You know people are a mix of the negative and the positive. It makes life interesting."
