Mail call from 8/3

August 04, 2005

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"In response to the people who think that rodents will overrun the entire earth if we get rid of all the stray cats, stray cats are generally killing wildlife such as birds, squirrels, rabbits and chipmunks. We have built a better mousetrap; this is the 21st century. We don't have to let cats run around overpopulating everything, and if you stop and think about the life of a feral cat, you're doing the animal a great disservice by letting it overpopulate."

- Fayetteville, Pa.

"CAFTA passed last week. Now you'll see 3 million jobs leave America, all because of the Republican Party. They all voted for it."

- Hagerstown

"The person in Williamsport who wants to ban trucks from parking on the shoulder is wrong. I'd rather have rest stops full and overflowing than have exhausted truck drivers still on the road."

"Greenberry Hills residents: do any of you actually know the percentage rate of crime in our area? How many shootings, rapes, and murders have taken place in the last 20 years? Do you realize we have at least two sheriff's deputies, one state police (officer) and one FBI agent as residents?"

- Hagerstown

"About the child support amnesty program. I think it's an excellent idea, but don't you think if they had the money and had any desire at all to make the payments, they would have already made them? I'm hoping the newspaper follows up on this to see how many of these delinquent payments are actually made after this two-week amnesty period."

- Hagerstown

"I'd like to make a comment on obituaries. I'd like to see the families put in the (female) person's maiden name and maybe when they graduated from high school, what year, and what school. Sometimes you recognize the person after all these years."

- Hancock

"I think it's ridiculous how a lot of American people in this country seem to judge each other by the clothes they wear and the wealth they may have. I get judged at times by the clothes I wear just because I like wearing stars and stripes, and red, white and blue clothing. I feel it's my life and it's my business if I choose to buy and wear the colors of this country. I'm not harming anyone or anything. I feel it's my free will to go wherever I want to go or be whomever I want to be. Home of the brave and land of the free."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"If there is any church that could use a like-new baby bassinet, I'd be willing to give it to you if you would leave your church information in Mail Call. I'd be glad to bring it to you."

- Hagerstown

"To the person who complained about the older, slower drivers, I wonder how they're going to drive when they get older."

- Hagerstown

"The enormous profits by high oil prices would be justified if most of it went to help the poor countries of the world, but I'm afraid it is going to the super-rich to finance bad things for good countries."

- Fiddlersburg

"I'm calling for the person who asked about how to cook spaghetti so that the leftovers don't get sticky. When you cook spaghetti, the first thing you do is run hot water over it to get the starch out, but if you're going to use it for cold pasta, then run cold water over it. Then it doesn't get sticky or gooey."

- Boonsboro

"I was shopping at Weis market on Saturday morning. When I came out, a nice couple asked me if I lost some money. It was found right by my vehicle. I checked my pocket - it was my money. It was not much, but it was a lot to me. I say thank you, God bless you, you are so honest."

- Sharpsburg

"When cooking spaghetti, add a small amount of oil and a small amount of salt to the water. When it's finished and you drain it, add a small amount of spaghetti sauce to it, and this will keep it from sticking."

- Hagerstown

"For the red velvet icing, use a small bowl and use granulated sugar. It looks bad at first, but after 12 minutes, it sets up really creamy."

- Hagerstown

"I'd like to inform the person who was at the yard sale on Little Antietam Road on Saturday that they left their prescription sunglasses here and we have them. Call 301-791-3575."

- Smithsburg

"I'm calling about all the phone books so far this year. I've had nine books thrown on my front porch. Enough already."

"I think the Board of Ed should start teaching keyboarding again to fourth-graders in public schools. "

- Hagerstown

"If there are any school students out there who need community service hours, tell them to contact some of their service clubs, such as Lions or Rotary. These clubs need help at some of their dinners and so forth, and can give credit for these hours. Also, the same clubs, through the guidance counselors or club members, can give information on academic scholarships."

- Washington County
