Man, 64, killed in Md. 85 accident

FREDERICK, Md. - A 64-year-old Adamstown, Md., man was killed Tuesday on Md. 85, south of Adamstown Road, when the 2002 Cadillac he was driving left the road, struck two power poles and rolled several times, according to a news release from Maryland State Police in Frederick.

Norris Carter was pronounced dead at the scene of the 7:06 p.m. accident, police said.

Carter was traveling north on Md. 85 when, "for unknown reasons," he drove off the road and up a dirt embankment, where he subsequently struck two power poles, causing the car to roll over, the release states. When the car started to roll, Carter was ejected, police said, and the vehicle came to rest in a farmer's field.

Motorcyclist injured in wreck


BRUNSWICK, Md. - A 22-year-old motorcyclist was flown to Washington County Hospital on Tuesday night after he was thrown from his bike over a guardrail on U.S. 340, west of the Frederick County line, according to a news release from state police.

Dennis Strewsberry Jr., of Brunswick, Md., was not listed as a patient at the hospital this morning, a hospital spokeswoman said.

At about 8:40 p.m., Strewsberry, driving a 1989 Honda motorcycle, was allegedly seen speeding on U.S. 340 when he failed to negotiate a curve, according to the release. He lost control of the motorcycle and the two "tumbled across the highway, striking and going over the right roadside guardrail," police said.

The motorcycle was broken into several pieces, the release states.

Strewsberry was charged with driving under the influence and several other traffic, license and registration violations, according to the release.

Sheriff's deputies respond to calls


The Washington County Sheriff's Department responded to the following calls on Tuesday, Sgt. Mark Knight said:

  • At 7:30 a.m., an air compressor, cassette tapes and keys were reported stolen from the 18100 block of Summerlin Drive. The items were valued at $300.

  • At 9 a.m., a brick was reportedly thrown through the window of a Toyota Land Cruiser parked in the 18900 block of Newhaven Terrace. The window was valued at $500.

  • At 11:30 a.m., a wallet and tools were reported stolen from a carport of a home in the 19900 block of Beaver Creek Road.

  • At 3:30 p.m., a bicycle was reported stolen in the 1200 block of Wabash Avenue.


Man cuts himself on leg with sword


BOONSBORO - A 21-year-old man accidentally cut himself on the leg as he was waving a sword Tuesday and lost a lot of blood, a Washington County emergency dispatcher said.

The man was at 19766 Lappans Road, near Boonsboro.

The cut was on the back of the man's leg. The dispatcher said there was "a lot of blood loss," so the man was taken to Washington County Hospital as a priority-one patient, which is the most urgent.

The call came to the dispatch center at 10:10 p.m. A Maryland State Police helicopter was called at 10:29 p.m. and was on its way to the hospital with the man at 10:56 p.m., the dispatcher said.
