National 9-10 All-Stars one win away from title

August 03, 2005

BALTIMORE - National, the losers' bracket champion, needed to beat West Salisbury, the winners' bracket champ, twice to win the Maryland Little League 9-10 State Tournament.

National is halfway to the title after coming from behind Tuesday evening to beat West Salisbury, 9-7. It was the third straight victory for National since dropping its opening game of the tournament.

The teams will play again today at 6 p.m. for the title at South Baltimore Little League.

"When you lose the first game, it makes you kind of think," National manager Jeff Swope said. "We just stepped up and told the kids, 'You know what you have to do.' Logan Appel, who pitched the first game for us, came back and pitched a beautiful game tonight. The kids don't give up."

Trailing 7-4 Tuesday, National rallied for a five-run fifth inning, capped by Jay Holbrook's bases-loaded two-run double that broke a 7-7 tie.

"Fifth inning we had the big spurt," Swope said. "Jay Holbrook had the big shot."

Josh Miller had three hits for National, while Appel added two and pitched a six-hitter.
