You Said It

August 01, 2005

"I'm calling in to the person who said that they had co-workers who had to scrape bubble gum off underneath a table. I just wanted to make a comment that you should take pride in your work and that you should want everything clean, and if the boss is asking you to scrape a little bit of bubble gum off of tables, it's not a big deal."

"Once again, we hear about the supposedly privately funded North Hagerstown High School football stadium. Then they go begging the city, state and County Commissioners for money."

- South Hagerstown

"I'm calling regarding the North High stadium. I hope the County Commissioners do not give $500,000 when our schools are in bad shape and need repairs. Other educational needs should be met and other county projects should be done - not $500,000 for North High's stadium. It was supposed to be built with no tax dollars and that is tax dollars that the county is giving. I don't want my taxes increased for a stadium at North High."

"Terrorism is not about Iraq, it's not about United States policies, it's not about Israel. It's about bin Laden and al-Qaida's plan to create an Islamic super-state that controls the world. This is what their plan is and we all must band together to fight it."

"I can't understand why North High is asking for state or county money for the second time. This was supposed to be purely private money, and now they're coming back to the taxpayers for more and more money."

"I was very upset when I read about the two men being killed when their pickup truck struck the rear of a tractor-trailer parked on the shoulder of I-70 at South Mountain rest area near Myersville. Many times in my travels, I have seen as many as 10 to 12 tractor-trailers parked on the shoulder at rest stops, due to the stops being filled. This is certainly very dangerous and should not be allowed at rest stops at anytime. Please give the smaller vehicles a chance."

"This is in reference to an article about the North High stadium supporters wanting more taxpayers' money. Originally, this stadium was said to have been financed by contributions. They've already gotten more than $400,000 from tax money, whether it's state money or from the county Open Space program, and now they're wanting an additional $500,000? No way. What happened to the agreement many years ago when the stadium was first built, that South High got the stadium and North High got other items? Please, no more tax dollars for something that we do not need, which is a recreational activity, not an academic one."

"To the person who said that there was a $50 million budget surplus in Maryland: Guess what? That's just a re-election advertisement. There's no surplus. As soon as the election's over, the surplus will disappear. Also, your co-pay went up. Everything's going up; my dentist charges 40 percent more, so I went to Winchester and had all my teeth pulled."

"The state says it has a $1 billion surplus, but state workers' co-pays have gone up as much as 500 percent. We need help or this governor will have to go."

- Boonsboro

"This is in reply to the person who wrote in about anonymous calls against President Bush sounding as if they come from the same person. This person may not like to hear this, but Mr. Bush is not a well-liked president. As a matter of fact, the latest polls show that he has only a 37 percent positive rating toward the war in Iraq. That means 63 percent of people are against him. Now, who's making all these calls? Hmmmm ..."

"I drive in Hagerstown and all around, and most of the problems I have are with young people tailing me, almost getting on my bumper. When I stop for a red light or a stop sign, I can't even see their headlights at the back of my car in daylight. I can't understand why they have to stop right at your bumper. Why can't they stay back?"

- Boonsboro

"The North High stadium supporters have some kind of nerve. When this project was proposed, it was to be built with private donations. Now I see they are asking the County Commissioners for $500,000 on top of the $150,000 from the state, $150,000 from the county's open space program and $100,000 from Hagerstown. Don't they need this money for a runway extension?"

- Hagerstown

"I'd like to congratulate my gerbil for learning how to crawl up the cardboard tube without being afraid."

- Hagerstown

"I live at Mount Aetna near Brightwood Acres and I think it's a shame that the County Commissioners have passed this ordinance for the quarry."

"I'd just like to say: No tax money for the stadium. It's supposed to be built with private funds. School is for learning, not sports. No tax money for that stadium."

"I can't believe I'm hearing that the commissioners sided with the quarry at the expense of the people. This just goes to show you that big business and power overrule the people anymore. I think they should really rise up and say enough is enough."
