Edward Jones investment representative Joan Bowers of Hagerstown recently received the Jack Phelan Blue Blazer Award for her outstanding performance over the past year. The award was named for the firm's former national sales manager, Jack Phelan.


Bowers was awarded a blue blazer with Edward Jones insignia buttons.

Bowers has been serving the Hagerstown area since 2002.

Dr. Nils Olson

FREDERICK, Md. - Dr. Nils Olson attended an intensive four-day hands-on course on tooth-colored bonding techniques from June 29 to July 2.

The course was presented by Dr. Newton Fahl of Curitiba, Brazil, at a state-of-the-art teaching facility in San Francisco. The course covered techniques for restoring broken and discolored front teeth and closing spaces between teeth, as well as complete smile makeovers.

Olson is one of 245 accredited members of the 7,000-member American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He practices in Frederick with an emphasis on cosmetic and advanced restorative dentistry.

Hub City General Store

Susan Rauth, co-owner of Hub City General Store, received her Professional Chocolatier Certification through Ecole Chocolat Professional School of Chocolat Arts.

The program will enable Rauth to better educate the chocolate novice. She now has the opportunity to work with veteran chocolatiers from such locales as Canada, France and Italy.

Hub City General Store is to open a new store at 201 N. Burhans Blvd. in August.

Shippensburg University

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Six people have been named to new posts and two others will share duties at Shippensburg University.

  • Roger Serr has been named acting vice president for student affairs. He most recently was dean of students and associate vice president for student affairs.

  • David Lovett has been named acting dean of students and associate vice president for student affairs. He most recently was associate vice president for student affairs.

  • Tracy Schoolcraft was named interim associate provost and dean of graduate studies. She most recently was a professor in and chair of the university's chemistry department.

  • Anthony S. Winter has been named interim dean of extended studies. He most recently was assciate dean/director of the Business Internship Program in the John L. Grove College of Business.

  • Thomas Speakman has been named dean of enrollment services. He was director of enrollment management at Penn State University Berks-Lehigh Valley.

  • Cathy Sprenger has been named registrar. She was in the university's Frehn Center for Professional and Organizational Development, where she was the university representative with the Workforce and Economic Development Network of Pennsylvania.

  • Mindy Fawks and David Topper, both associate vice presidents for administration and finance, will share responsibilities for the leadership of that division. Fawks will remain responsible for fiscal issues and Topper will remain responsible for human resources and physical plant operation.

Waynesboro Veterinary Clinic

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Veterinarian Deanna Becker has joined the staff of Waynesboro Veterinary Clinic.

Becker, of Hagerstown, is a 1991 graduate of St. Maria Goretti High School, attended Hagerstown Community College and is a 1995 graduate of McDaniel College, formerly Western Maryland College, in Westminster, Md. She is a graduate of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in Blacksburg, Va.

4-Star Athletic Complex

Mike Heinlin recently attended the Tumble Track Workshop in Prince George's County, Md.

The workshop, taught by a top trampoline gymnast, included the new execution of skills and promoting progression of ability based on a strengthening concept.

n Also, Deanna Kline attended the 2005 Junior Olympic Region VI-VII Compulsory Workshop in Providence, R.I. The workshop was under the direction of the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic Program Committee master staff.

She reviewed the upcoming routines for Levels 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 for the competitive season 2005-13. She also participated in the Flexibility and Conditioning Symposium.
