Historic Herr House open to the public


WILLOW STREET, Pa. - The 1719 Herr House and grounds will be open to the public for Heritage Day, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6. The museum will offer a variety of demonstrations, presentations, workshops and hands-on activities for young and old.

During Heritage Day, the blacksmithing and woodworking shops on the museum grounds will be in use. House carpentry, use of the two-man saw and shingle making will be demonstrated.

Other activities or demonstrations include threshing, bake oven cooking, fabric dyeing, weaving, quilting and other skills.

New York City bus trip


NEWVILLE, Pa. - Newville Area Community Center will sponsor a trip to New York City, Wednesday, Aug. 10. The cost is $43.

Leave from Heishman's Softball Complex in Newville at 7 a.m. and from Weis Market in Carlisle, Pa., at 7:20 a.m. Leave New York for the return trip at 5 p.m. with a food stop on the way home.

Virginia wine festival


MILLWOOD, Va. - The 30th annual Virginia Wine Festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, and Sunday, Aug. 21, at Historic Long Branch Farm. The festival will be held rain or shine.

The festival is sponsored by Vinifera Wine Growers Association and includes wine tasting, food, crafts, antique cars and live music.

Tickets can be purchased on the Web at www.showsinc.com and cost $20 in advance or $22 at the gate for ages 21 and older; $14 in advance or $16 at the gate for designated drivers; $5 for ages 20 and younger; and free for ages 2 and younger. Tickets are nonrefundable and do not cover food and some activities. Parking is free.
