Workshops for fitness professionals


Washington County Recreation Department and National Exercise Trainers Association, a non-profit fitness professional association, will co-sponsor two workshops:

n Group exercise instructor certification: 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6. Potential and current fitness instructors will learn basic academic and practical application of teaching group exercise. No college, science or teaching background is required. Fee is $259.

n Mindful movement: 8 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 7. Explore a variety of mind-body exercise genres, such as yoga, Pilates, tai chi and breathing techniques. Learn how to include these principles into stretching and movement activities in a group exercise class. Fee is $79.

Arthritis educational seminar


FREDERICK, Md. - An arthritis educational seminar will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, at C. Burr Artz Public Library community room, 110 E. Patrick St., Frederick.

Dr. Neeti Bhargava will present the program. The program is sponsored by Centocor, Orthopaedics Associates of Frederick and the Arthritis Foundation.

Health fair planned


A health fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at Walnut Street Community Health Center, 24 N. Walnut St., Hagerstown.

The fair will include free health screenings, refreshments, children's fingerprinting, and giveaways which include a color TV, children's bike and helmet and restaurant coupons and store gift cards. For information, call 301-393-3436.




Hospital programs


Washington County Hospital offers the following programs:

  • Congestive heart failure - A program for individuals with newly diagnosed heart failure or those needing help in managing their illness. Management classes and a telephone-monitoring program are available. Call the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at 301-790-8940 for information.

  • Weight-loss program - A medically managed weight-loss program at Robinwood Endocrinology. For information or to sign up for an information session, call 301-714-4041.

  • Yoga - Washington County Hospital offers several yoga classes to meet a variety of needs: seniors, prenatal and postpartum, beginners and experienced. Classes are held at Robinwood Medical Center. For information, call 301-790-8907.

  • Breast cancer clinics - Washington County Hospital offers free breast health education, clinical exams and transportation for women of all ages. Mammograms, if needed, will be scheduled. The clinics are funded by the Susan G. Komen Breast Care Foundation. For information, call 301-665-4671.





Nurse refresher course


Hagerstown Community College will offer registered nurses and practical nurses the opportunity to maintain or reestablish an active license during a nurse refresher course starting in September.

The course includes 84 hours of theory and 60 hours of clinical instruction. The theory portion is offered in a distance learning format Mondays and Thursdays beginning Sept. 8, from 6:30 to 10:15 p.m. Topics covered will include delivery of nursing care utilizing the nursing process; performing nursing procedures, including medication administration; caring for patients with various medical and surgical disturbances; and re-integrating oneself into the professional responsibilities of nursing. Cost is $600 for the theory portion and $500 for the clinical.
