Dave Ashburn, president of the Exchange Club's Mason Dixon District, won the National Presidential Exchange Club's award while attending the national convention in Salt Lake City, Utah. The award was presented by National Exchange Club President Jerry DeFeo.

Ashburn was honored for turning around a slumping district, building the district's first new club (Washington County Friends of Education) in 14 years and for his work with the national organization.

Ashburn, a past president of the Hagerstown Exchange Club, was one of five to receive the national honor.

There are 14 clubs in the Mason Dixon District, which covers Maryland, the District of Columbia and parts of Delaware and Pennsylvania. Exchange, America's Service Club, is a group of men and women working together to make our communities better places to live through programs of service in Americanism, community service, youth activities and its national project, prevention of child abuse. The Franklin County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees met at the Kauffman Community Center for the general membership business meeting and luncheon.

Gerald Reichard called the meeting to order. After lunch, David Bailey, Region IV director and past president of the Franklin County Chapter, presented Sophia Anderson with the chapter's $500 scholarship. Sophia is a graduate of James Buchanan High School.

Dalton Paul, program chairman, introduced the speaker, Dr. William Daniels, a retired medical assistant. Daniels spoke on Civil War medicine and brought a display of 1860s medical instruments.

Couples were celebrated at the meeting. Some interesting comments were made by couples who in attendance. John and Helen Wingert said the accomplishment they were most proud being the church organists. Barbara and Maurice Montgomery told of one of their funniest moments in their marriage. John and Bonnie Mach won the couples' door prize.

The library award was won by John Rajtik, who assigned it to the Coyle Free Library.
