Pedestrian killed by moving vehicle

July 26, 2005|by DAVE McMILLION

A 79-year-old woman was killed instantly on W.Va. 9 in Morgan County Monday afternoon when she was struck by a westbound car near River Road, said a West Virginia State Police spokesman.

Nettie Michael, of 9908 Martinsburg Road, Hedgesville, W.Va., was struck in front of her home, said Trooper 1st Class E.D. Widmeyer, who received the call about 4:35 p.m.

Widmeyer said Michael might have walked to a mailbox along the road and was coming back across the highway when she was struck.

After being struck by the front of the car, Michael went over the vehicle and landed on the road behind it, Widmeyer said.

Widmeyer said he might have an accident reconstructionist examine the scene, but said it appears there was nothing the driver could have done.

The driver of the 2002 Hyundai - James Wachter, 42, of 880 Pious Ridge Road, Berkeley Springs - had just crested a hill on the highway and saw Michael, Widmeyer said.

"She was pretty much right in the middle of the road. It was a bad place where she was trying to cross," Widmeyer said.

Wachter was not injured.

The impact to the car shattered the windshield, Widmeyer said.

Wachter's girlfriend, who was a passenger in the car, suffered glass cuts, Widmeyer said. Jennifer Oldham, 33, of Stephens City, Va., was treated at the scene, Widmeyer said.

There were no other witnesses to the accident, Widmeyer said.

The accident occurred about two-tenths of a mile east of River Road, which is close to the county line between Morgan and Berkeley counties.
