Funkstown blanks Frederick

FUNKSTOWN - Phil Powell highlighted a four-run fifth inning with a three-run homer as Funkstown Post 211 defeated Frederick 6-0 in a Western Maryland District American Legion game Thursday.

Nate Steelman pitched five strong innings to pick up the victory for Funkstown (35-9). Tim Kellinger, Matt Ridenour and Tyler Beard each had two hits for the winners.


Grier wins second straight

Alicia Grier shot a 2-under 34 on the back nine and finished with a 2-over 74 to win the fourth event of the 2005 Junior Masters Tour at Beaver Creek Country Club on Thursday.

Grier, who has won the last two events, birdied holes 10 and 16 and did not bogey on the back nine to finish six shots in front of Steve Hutzell.


The fifth installment of the Tour will be held July 28 at Beaver Creek, with the first players teeing off at 12:30.

Hagerstown Senators tryout

The Hagerstown Senators will hold a tryout for their U-13 team at the Conococheague Junior League field in Williamsport at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday - not on Saturday as initially reported.
