Youth baseball is served up this weekend

There's no shortage of youth baseball in the area this weekend as numerous local teams take to the diamond with hopes of extending their postseasons.

Maryland 9-10 Section Tournament

Hagerstown's National Little League, the District 1 champion, will play host to District 2 champ East Frederick National in a best-of-3 series. Game 1 will be played Saturday at 6 p.m. Game 2 is Sunday at 2, with Game 3 at 6 p.m. Monday, if necessary. The winner advances to the four-team state tournament in Baltimore next week.

Maryland Little League State Tournament (11-12)

Valley Little League, coming off its first District 1 title since 1983, opens play Saturday at noon against the District 5 (Northern Maryland) champion. The winner of that game will face District 2 champion Thurmont at 3:30 Sunday. All games will be played at Frederick National Little League.

The seven-team double-elimination tournament runs through Thursday.

Maryland Junior League State Tournament


Conococheague's 13-year-olds advanced to the state tournament by defeating Maugansville in the District 1 championship game. The double-elimination tournament begins Saturday at North East Little League in Cecil County.

Maryland Senior League State Tournament

Though no local teams are involved in the tournament, the seven-team double-elimination tournament will be played at Maugansville Senior League beginning Saturday.

Oakland defeated South Mountain for the District 1 title and the right to play in the state tournament.

PONY Section Tournament

Hagerstown 'B' plays host to three other teams beginning tonight at Funkhouser Park. South Adams faces West Carroll at 6, followed by Chambersburg and host Hagerstown 'B' at 8.

Play continues Saturday with games at 3, 5:30 and 8. The championship round will be Sunday at 2:30 and, if necessary, 4:30.

Colt Region Tournament

The tournament which began Thursday continues through the weekend at Hellane Park in Hagerstown.

Today's action features Hagerstown 'A' and Lawrence County (Pa.) in a losers' bracket game at 6, followed by Columbia (Md.) and Cranberry (Pa.) in the winners' bracket at 8:30. Games will be played Saturday at 2, 5 and 8:30, with Sunday's championship round games at 2 and 5, if necessary.

Junior Legion

Funkstown begins play today in the National Amateur Baseball Federation 16U Tournament in Sykesville, Md. The double-elimination tournament runs through Monday, with the winner earning a berth in the BATF World Series in Northville, Mich., July 28 to Aug. 2.

Funkstown plays The Hartford Sox today at 3:30 and will play again at 6:30.

The Funkstown roster includes Chad Bikle, Mark Dattilio, Tommy Evans, Kenney Feigley, Kyle Hoffman, Todd Jacobson, Tim Jacobson, Brock Jamison, Kevin Kocsis, Timmy Leather, Zeke Ricketts, Jake Staebler, David Stone, Marcellus Sumlin, Ryan Wilson and Steve Younker.
