BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - The kickoff event for the fifth Morgan County Fair begins Saturday.

Larry Lower, president of the Morgan County Fair Board, said this is the second year for the Morgan County Fair Run and Walk at Cacapon State Park. The events begins Saturday at 8 a.m.

The cost to run is $15 ($12 for early registration), he said, and each participant gets a T-shirt.

On July 29, a community dance will be at 8 p.m. at the Berkeley Springs High School gym.

The fifth annual fair will be July 30 and 31 at the high school.

"Every year, we try to add something new. In year three, we added fireworks, and last year we added a tremendous number of activities. This year, we're adding a community dance. All ages are welcome," Lower said.

Morgan County Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts are planning to camp on the high school football field July 29 and 30. They will set up and display their camps, and "help with fair activities to get their community service badges," he said.

The fair still has a heavy emphasis on youth, but has broadened to include health, conservation, natural resources and adults and seniors, Lower said.

The original "old-time" rural fair did not work anymore, he said. "Now it's a celebration of Morgan County. We celebrate what it was and added conservation."

The fair has grown steadily, Lower said. The first year brought out a few hundred people. Last year's attendance was about 3,000 during the two-day event.

On Sunday, the fair will celebrate National Kids Day, "but there are lots of kids activities both days," he said.

The Stevens Family and Sanders Sisters, a pair of local gospel groups, will perform Sunday afternoon.
