Brashears named to coaches' national team

PREP BASEBALL



St. Maria Goretti catcher Kevin Brashears was recently named a second team All-American by the National High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Brashears batted .500 with eight home runs and 28 RBI and was one of only two juniors selected to the top two teams. He also was named to the All-District 2 team, which covers Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and the District of Columbia.

Jefferson's Brian Collins also was named to the All-District team.

LEGION BASEBALL



Funkstown sweeps twinbill


FUNKSTOWN - Phil Powell hit a pair of two-run homers to lead Funkstown Post 211 to a doubleheader sweep of Berkeley Post 14, 14-4 and 6-2.

Funkstown (33-9) pounded out 14 hits in the first game. Tim Kellinger had three hits and three RBI, while Josh Bowers and Matt Ridenour each had two hits and two RBI. Trevor Cobb and Drew Crawford each had two hits.

In the second game, Powell's homer highlighted a three-run fifth inning which gave Post 211 the lead for good. Crawford added a solo home run in ths sixth inning and David Warrenfeltz had two hits.




BRIEF



Hagerstown Senators tryout


The Hagerstown Senators will hold a tryout for their U-13 team July 23 at 1 p.m. at the Conococheague Junior League field in Williamsport. The tryout is open to boys who have just finished their 12-year-old season in Little League baseball or equivalent.
