A Hagerstown man was killed Thursday when the vehicle he was driving hit a minivan and flipped over, throwing him to the ground, police said.

James Richardson Mullendore, 73, of 1534 Crest View Ave., was fatally injured in the 2:20 p.m. accident, Deputy Jason D. Litten of the Washington County Sheriff's Department wrote in a news release this morning.

Mullendore, who was driving a 1999 Suzuki Vitara, was pronounced dead at Washington County Hospital, police said.

The minivan driver - Kenneth Foster Peck Jr., 62, of 1525 Mark Drive, Chambersburg, Pa., was taken to Washington County Hospital, where he was treated and released.

Police said the minivan, a 1992 Dodge Caravan, was westbound on Howell Road, which runs parallel to Dual Highway between Edgewood Drive and Mount Aetna Road.

When the Caravan turned right into Foxshire Plaza, the Vitara hit the Caravan from behind, then kept going.

Robert Rose of Frederick, Md., said he was on Mount Aetna Road, passing Howell Road, when he saw the Vitara sliding sideways on the grass after hitting the Caravan.

As the Vitara continued up a banked berm, it flipped over.

Rose said he saw the man who had been driving the Vitara lying on the ground. He said the man was unconscious when he ran over to help him.

As police investigated 45 minutes after the crash, the Vitara sat perpendicular to the traffic lanes, about 100 feet from Mount Aetna Road.

Its front end and windshield were smashed. It appeared that both air bags had deployed.

A stuffed animal, a backpack, a left sneaker, a pair of jeans and a Harley-Davidson hat were scattered near the vehicle, which had a Maryland license plate.

The Caravan, which had a Pennsylvania license plate, sat at the edge of the shopping center parking lot, farther up Howell Road.

The van's left rear end was damaged. The back window was missing and shattered glass was strewn around the vehicle on the pavement.
