Man charged with raping teenage girl

July 14, 2005

HANCOCK - The Washington County Sheriff's Department has charged a 47-year-old Hancock man with raping and sexually abusing a 17-year-old girl.

The Herald-Mail is not printing the man's name because police said that identifying him would also be identifying her.

The man was charged on Wednesday with one count each of second-, third- and fourth-degree sex offense, as well as one count of attempted third-degree sex offense.

He also was charged with one count apiece of second-degree rape and taking part in a perverted practice and two counts of second-degree assault.

The sheriff's department said the girl reported on June 10 that the man sexually assaulted her the previous day. He attempted to touch her inappropriately, then forced her to perform a sex act on him, police said.

Police said they learned during the investigation that the girl and the man had sex one time. Court records allege that happened in April, May or June.

The man was being held at the Washington County Detention Center Wednesday night on $100,000 bond.
