Suns rally to beat Captains

July 13, 2005

EASTLAKE, Ohio - Russ Triplett's three-run home run in the eighth inning gave the Hagerstown Suns their first lead of the game as they rallied from a 4-0 hole to post a 6-5 victory over the Lake County Captains on Tuesday afternoon.

Grant Psomas walked and James Burt was hit by a pitch to set the stage for Triplett, who with two outs took Lake County reliever Brandon Rickert deep for his second home run this season. The homer was part of a 3-for-4, four-RBI day for Triplett.

Lake County scored twice in the first inning and twice more in the second off Hagerstown starter Michael Devaney, who only allowed one hit in six innings (Lake County had two hits in the game), but was hurt by four walks and two errors, including his own throwing error in the second.

The Suns (7-12, 49-40) cut the lead in half in the fifth when Triplett and Yury Santana led off the inning with singles and later scored on RBI groundouts by Matthew Fisher and Ambiorix Concepcion. Hagerstown added a run in the sixth when James Burt doubled and scored on a Triplett single.

Chad Longworth hit a solo homer off Suns reliever Jose Gomez (1-1) with one out in the ninth, but Marcelo Perez came on to get the final two outs for his seventh save, stranding two Captains and handing Gomez the win.

The Suns are off today and host Lake County for two games starting Thursday.

Allegany High School graduate Aaron Laffey made the start for Lake County, allowing eight hits and two runs (one earned) in five innings in a no-decision.
