Pet of the week

July 09, 2005

Ziggy is a gray kitten with amber eyes. She and her sister Sara are two of more than 300 cats and kittens that made their way into the Humane Society of Washington County in the past 30 days. Because there aren't enough homes for all these unwanted animals, the Humane Society encourages all pet owners to spay and neuter their dogs and cats.

Pet tip: Keep your animal well-groomed to stave off summer skin problems. Shaving a heavy-coated dog's hair to a one-inch length helps prevent overheating. Don't shave the hair down to the skin or it will rob him of protection from the sun. Cats should be brushed often.

To adopt Ziggy or another pet, visit the Humane Society of Washington County at 13011 Maugansville Road. The shelter is open Tuesdays through Saturdays.

To volunteer or make a donation, call 301-733-2060, ext. 237.
