Quick start lets Maugansville cruise past Conococheague

WILLIAMSPORT - Maugansville Little League had its offense ready to go on Friday night as it defeated Conococheague Little League 11-3 in a Maryland District 1 9-10 Tournament losers' bracket game.

"It was a good victory for the boys," Maugansville manager Rich Montgomery said. "I think they're back to where they need to be. We hit the ball well and fielded the ball well. Everybody is contributing."

Maugansville will play at Federal tonight at 6 in the losers' bracket semifinal.

"We're looking forward to playing Federal," Montgomery said. "We're not taking them lightly. We're going out and playing some serious ball."

Maugansville scored five runs in the bottom of the first. Clay Thomas led off by reaching on a throwing error and took second when Derek Herbert singled to left. Matt Daley later walked to load the bases.


Brent Mentzer followed with a two-run single to left, with Daley advancing to third. Mentzer stole second, and Daley scored and Mentzer went to third when C.J. Owings reached on an infield error.

Owings stole second, and a pair of wild pitches allowed both Mentzer and Owings to score to cap the inning.

Conococheague scored three runs in the top of the third to reduce the deficit to 5-3 when leadoff batter Brandon Greene ripped a two-run double and later scored on a wild pitch.

Maugansville responded with three runs in the bottom of the third to make it 8-3 when winning pitcher John Britton clubbed a two-run double and Owings scored on a wild pitch.

Maugansville scored two more runs in the fourth on RBI singles by Daley and Mentzer, and added its final run in the fifth when Trent Sauble scored on a throwing error.

"I give credit to Maugansville," Conococheague manager Troy Boyer said. "They played a real solid game. We hit the ball hard, they just played great defense. They have good pitching. We just weren't playing our best defense, but they were."
