The Ryans

Doug and Ruby Ryan of Hagerstown celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday, May 28, 2005. An open house was held in the Family Life Center of Maugansville Bible Brethren Church, where the Ryans are members. The event was hosted by their son and spouse, Scott and Doneta Ryan; and two grandchildren. Approximately 130 friends and family members attended the celebration.

The Ryans were married May 14, 1955, at St. Matthew's United Methodist Church in Hagerstown by the Rev. Lester Teter, now deceased.

Mrs. Ryan is the daughter of the late Winford and Dora Weber. She worked in retail sales and banks.

Mr. Ryan is the son of the late Alfred and LaVerne Ryan. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He retired from Mack Trucks in 1991 and is employed with Direct Mail Processors of Hagerstown.

The Downeys

Barbara and Vernon Downey of Hagerstown celebrated their 50th anniversary on Saturday, June 11, 2005, at Fountainhead Country Club. The event was hosted by their daughters, Carole and Janice Downey. They shared their celebration with family and friends.


The Downeys were married on June 11, 1955, at Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Hagerstown.

Barbara Downey is the former Barbara Buckley. She retired from The Washington County Board of Education, having been a biology teacher, a guidance counselor and an administrator.

Vernon Downey retired from the Washington County Board of Education as a drafting teacher at South Hagerstown High School.

Both remain active in the community.

The Downeys have two daughters, Carole Downey of Baltimore and Janice Downey of Hagerstown.
