Police probe crime spree in county

July 09, 2005

Thieves on a crime spree in a neighborhood south of Hagerstown made off with two luxury automobiles, several sets of golf clubs and an expensive bicycle sometime between late Thursday and early Friday, an investigator with the Washington County Sheriff's Department said.

Investigator Greg Alton said the thefts occurred in and around the Black Rock and Brightwood East housing developments off Mount Aetna Road.

A 2004 BMW was stolen from Ayoub Lane in Brightwood East, Alton said. The car, which was heavily damaged, was recovered on Thames Street around 7 a.m.

The second vehicle, a 2002 BMW, was taken from Suffolk Drive in Brightwood East. Also damaged, it was found in a field off Bentley Court, Alton said.

Keys had been left in both vehicles, he said.

A man's set of golf clubs and a women's set were taken from a garage at a residence on Ayoub Lane. The man's set was valued at $5,000 and the woman's at $3,000, Alton said.

Another set of clubs, valued at $3,000, was taken from Shalom Lane, Alton said. Also, a set of clubs was missing from the trunk of the 2004 BMW when it was found. They were valued at $2,500, Alton said.

A 2002 Schwinn racing bicycle valued at $1,800 was taken from the back of a vehicle on Sani Lane in Black Rock. Thieves also broke into a garage at a residence on Shinnecock Court and attempted to steal a bicycle, police said.

Alton said he has no suspects in the thefts.
