Sheriff's deputies respond to calls

The Washington County Sheriff's Department responded to the following calls since Tuesday, Cpl. Roy Harsh said:

On Tuesday:

  • At 9:41 a.m., credit cards were reported stolen out of a Kia Spectra parked in the 11200 block of Youngstoun Drive.

  • At 10:56 a.m., a $304 check from a business was reported illegally cashed in the first block of West Potomac Parkway in Williamsport.

  • At 11:03 a.m., several fire extinguishers and a radio were reported stolen from a boat at Bower's Marine, at 17815 Virginia Ave.

  • At 11:06 a.m., a mailbox in the 13800 block of McIntosh Circle was reported damaged.

  • At 6:19 p.m., a 1989 Chevrolet Suburban was keyed while parked in the 11800 block of Oriole Drive.
    Food on the stove blamed for fire


    Food on the stove was blamed for a minor fire Tuesday evening in the 800 block of Washington Avenue.

    Firefighters from First Hose, Antietam, Western Enterprise and Pioneer Hook and Ladder responded shortly after 7 p.m. Residents were able to return to the building after fans were used to clear smoke.

Area police plan sobriety checkpoint


Maryland State Police, Washington County Sheriff's deputies and Hagerstown City Police will conduct a sobriety checkpoint sometime before Sunday.

The exact location, date and time of the checkpoint aimed at drunken and/or drugged drivers will not be released. There also will be additional roving patrols in an effort to make the roads safer.

Fire destroys shed at Pa. church


WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Fire destroyed a storage shed at a church in Washington Township on Monday, according to Waynesboro Fire Chief Ron Flegel.

The fire at the Antrim Faith Baptist Church, 6621 Marsh Road, was called in at 6:29 p.m. and firefighters were on the scene for more than two hours, Flegel said.

Flegel said the incident report had no information about the shed's contents or the cause of the fire.

Two men injured in U.S. 30 crash in Pa.


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Two men were injured Monday in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of U.S. 30 and Spring Valley Road in Guilford Township, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Police said the accident happened at 1:45 p.m. when Merle Witter, 75, of Chambersburg, drove a 2001 Buick Sedan from Spring Valley Road onto U.S. 30 and collided with a 2005 Toyota pickup driven by Rodney Cline, 41, of Chambersburg.

Police described injuries to both men as moderate and said they were treated at Chambersburg Hospital.

No major problems reported on Fourth


MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Area law enforcement agencies patrolling the War Memorial Park area reported three arrests during Fourth of July activities there on Monday.

Police said in a news release that three arrests were made: one adult for an outstanding warrant, one adult for public intoxication and one juvenile for public intoxication.

Martinsburg Police reported no major problems during the event and said police received a number of favorable comments about the fireworks display.
